DRIVER IC FOR MOSFET

The IC driver for MOSFETs, also called gate driver, is a crucial component for efficiently and safely driving MOSFETs.

Function of the driver IC:

A MOSFET requires a specific voltage across its port (gate) to turn on and off. Control signals from microcontrollers or logic circuits operate at relatively low voltages and limited currents. The driver IC performs two main functions:

  • Signal amplification: It increases the amplitude of the control signal to a voltage level suitable for fully activating the MOSFET (usually between 10V and 20V).
  • Current amplification: Provides the current needed to rapidly charge and discharge the MOSFET's gate capacitance. This is important to ensure fast and accurate switching of the MOSFET.

Benefits of using an IC driver:

  • Improved efficiency: Properly driving the MOSFET reduces power losses due to slow switching times and partial conduction;
  • Protection of the MOSFET: The driver IC can integrate protection features such as timeout for overcurrent and short-circuit prevention;
  • Enhanced switching speed: The driver's ability to rapidly deliver high currents allows the MOSFET to switch quickly, which is important in high-frequency applications such as power converters;
  • Galvanic isolation: Some driver ICs offer galvanic isolation between the low-level control signal and the high-voltage output that drives the MOSFET.
